Horse Playdays

My family and I have gone to a couple of horse play days this past month. Families will come to watch or enter competitions if they have a horse. The 6 competitions are,

  • Cloverleaf
  • Pole Bending
  • Steer Mugging
  • Stick Horse Barrels
  • Team Roping
  • Dummy Roping

I have entered Cloverleaf, Pole Bending, and Stick Horse Barrels. Cloverleaf is 3 barrels placed in the shape of a cloverleaf. You go around in a certain pattern, as fast as you can, because they do time you.

Pole Bending is 6 poles placed in a line. You go up, then winding, then winding, and as fast as you can, go down. On this one they also time you. Just don't become nervous, because then you will fall off the horse. The first time I did it, I was nervous, but, fortunately, I did not fall off.

Stick Horse Barrels is 3 little barrels placed in the shape of a cloverleaf. You run around them as fast as you can. They time you with a stopwatch this time. You also have a stick horse between your legs.

At the end they give out ribbons and medals to the winners. They go all the way to sixth place! The top three winners get medals. I have two fourth place ribbons, and one fifth place ribbon.

They also have snacks, but not chairs! So bring your lawn chair they say! The snacks are also free. Maybe you can get more information from the Salem Sayers Baptist Church. (Remember that they are not having any more play days until next year!) Ask about the horse play days. So, maybe you'll get to go to the next horse play days!

Across the Rose Hedge With Aunt Merry

This is a really great book! Each of the chapters has a saying from Aunt Merry at the beginning, and then a Bible verse. At the first chapter, for example, it reads: "Aunt Merry says: 'Never argue or quarrel.' The Bible says: 'Do all things without... disputings.' Philippians 2:14" After that, there is a story taken from Aunt Merry's house. Harold & Hilda Happy and Peter & Polly Potter come over to Aunt Merry's house in every chapter. Harold & Hilda are very well mannered, but Peter & Polly aren't that good. As you might of thought, the saying from Aunt Merry and the Bible verse is about the rest of the chapter. Aunt Merry tries to teach them to be nicer. And although they do not know it, Harold & Hilda are a big part of training Peter & Polly. A storybook teaching the common courtesies to primary-aged children. Available from Rod & Staff Publishers. Call 606-522-4348 for a free catalog.
